Solenoid Valve Basics: 2/2, 3/2 and 5/2 Functions Explained

The notation 5/2 means five ports and two positions: supply, two outlet ports, two exhaust ports, and two switching states. It is the standard choice for double-acting cylinders.

For single-acting cylinders or air-assisted functions, a 3/2 valve (three ports, two positions) with normally-closed or normally-open behavior is used.

Pay attention to coil voltage (DC24V, AC220V are common), power consumption and whether the valve is NPT, RC or G threaded to match your piping standard.

Our SY, VF and MVSC series cover the common port sizes from M5 to RC3/8 with bracket and manifold mounting options.
