How to Select a Pneumatic Cylinder: Bore Size and Stroke Made Simple

Selecting the right cylinder starts with the load. A common rule of thumb: the air pressure multiplied by the piston area should give 1.5 to 2 times the force needed by the load, leaving margin for friction and speed requirements.

Stroke length should include not only the travel distance but also extra margin for linkage and stopper positions. For horizontal moves, consider side-load on the rod; use guided cylinders or external guides when the load is not centered.

Cushioning matters at higher speeds. Adjustable cushions or external shock absorbers such as our ACJ/AC/AD series protect the machine at cycle ends and extend equipment life.

Finally, choose the mounting style - foot, flange, clevis or trunnion - according to the load path. Our sales engineers can verify your selection for free; just send us the load, pressure and speed.
